They make money through the ads they run on the websites, as well as anyone who sponsors the websites. Everytime you click on an ad, it generates incomes for them. Think about it this way, Myspace has 120million users. Say 2% clicks an ad a day that’s 2.4m clicks a day, which is on the high end, but still. Say the average ad is worth 10cents, that’s 240k a day. Big money is made this way.

I’m planning to start a forum with this idea that, if successful, would generate a lot of traffic. There is hardly any competition right now and I plan to include 3 main categories. The forum would eventually be generation a load of traffic. Naturally I need a good web host to do this. I am planning to do with Invision Power Board or something similar, though that may change in the future. So what host would I need for this? What have been your experiences with web hosts? Anything you recommend? Why? I’d love to hear your stories and recommendations. Many thanks in advance for all the help I get.

You don’t have to get some expensive hosting, capable of sustaining millions of visitors right away. It would cost you a couple of hundreds dollars per month, and it would be completely necessary. Just get one of those shared hosts and start building traffic. When you notice that you’re getting close to your host’s limits, just copy your forum’s MySQL database, open a hosting account with some expensive host and recreate your forum using that database. Then change your domain nameservers to your new host and the transition will be seamless from your old host to a new one. Your visitors wouldn’t even notice that you changed hosts.
